Today was the first day of M-Term and my woodworking experience! I walked into the Tinkeria with a good attitude and lots of ideas for my personal project. This course offers 2 projects, a small personal box and a choice project using skills learned in this course and the 9/10 Design Tech class. To start the day, Mr. Grisbee explained some terminology and some logistical permitters such as budget per student, and project size. Having already met to plan, our group quickly got to work sketching boxes and brainstorming personal projects. I began planning my box which will replace my aging lapel pin case on my desk at home. I was excited and before I knew it, it was lunchtime. After some delicious tomato meatball stew and rice, I returned to the Tinkeria for the milling and re-sawing lesson. Mr. Grisbee explained that raw wood is cheaper than milled wood and with the right tools, milling wood is fairly straightforward. The wood used for us projects is S4S, (surfaced on four sides). Milling with the tools available at Post Oak follows the process of using the jointer to smooth one side and square one edge, smoothing the other side with the planer, and slicing the last rough edge with the table saw. Having taken Design Tech, using the planer and table saw was not a problem. Even though the jointer was new to me, it was not very hard and I never felt unsafe. After these steps were complete, the class took a break before beginning the re-sawing process. Re-sawing is the process of cutting a thicker board into thinner boards. After splitting my board into two on the table saw, I used the planer to smooth the area which had contact with the saw blade. After completing the milling practice, I began planning for my personal project. Overall, today was a fun re-introduction to woodworking and I learned how to use the Jointer. I am excited to visit the lumber yard tomorrow and choose wood for my projects.
