Day 1(Alex Richard)--Milling, Resawing, & Design

For the first day of the woodworking M-Term, I practiced both design and key skills throughout the morning and afternoon. Initially, I took the ideas we had brainstormed in previous weeks to create a rough sketch of the two projects we plan to complete over the next two weeks. The assignment is to create a box, and the goal is to expand our skills in woodworking by utilizing several different machines and woodworking techniques to prepare for our second, larger, and personalized project.
The first sketch was a blueprint for a box that would hold my art supplies. I measured the length of my pencils, pens, and markers to design a storage space that would comfortably hold my materials.
The second sketch is based on our personal projects, and I have chosen to build a lap desk. The goal is to create a space where I can work on my laptop, read, or draw from places besides a countertop/desk.
In the afternoon, we started with practicing how to mill and resaw a piece of lumber in preparation for our box project. We learned how to use 3 machines in total: first, the jointer, where we flattened one face of the lumber and squared one edge. Second, the planer flattens the opposite side, making both faces of the board smooth, flat, and parallel. Finally, we used the table saw to square the fourth and final edge, and then cut the board into two equal ½” X 2 ½” X 10” pieces of wood. Personally, this was the most difficult part of the day, as I was initially quite afraid of the sawing tools; however, after the first few passes through the saws, I got used to it.
