Day 2(Alex Richard)--Sketching, Lumber yard, and starting the boxes
For the second day of woodworking M-term, we worked on developing designs, had an outing, and continued working on milling and re-sawing. In the morning, the first task was to finalize our sketches for the box assignment. This included a detailed drawing, which consisted of a view from the top, side, front, and bottom, that was scaled with appropriate dimensions, and indications of where the rabbets, dados, and miter cuts would go.
In the latter half of the morning, using the measurements we had just finished, we went to the lumber yard and bought wood for our boxes. Luckily, the weather had been nice, though slightly cold, and time at the lumber yard was relaxing. In addition to getting wood boards for the first project, we bought two large pieces of plywood for a few of the individual projects, including mine; by the time we returned to school, it was lunch.
.
In the afternoon, we started on cutting our large pieces of lumber into smaller, refined, usable boards through the milling, re-sawing, and dimensioning processes. By this time, I had gotten much more comfortable with the power tools, and most of the afternoon was spent on processing the wood we had bought. In between working on the woods, and while we alternated terms using the power tools, we worked on blogs, and continued planning for our second project. To finish off the day, we cleaned the many, many piles of sawdust that had accumulated throughout the afternoon. See you tomorrow!
