Day 3 (Jonah) Box Walls and Sketching

Today, I began by finishing the milling process from yesterday by running my four boards through the planer. After smoothing the boards, I focused on measuring the full-size sketch of my geometric wall boards and listing the sizes of each cut of wood that will be needed to complete it. I had decided on maple for the cut pieces as it is a lighter wood and would contrast nicely with the dark plywood backing. After finalizing the written list, I joined the group for a lesson from Mr. Grisbee on key techniques for the walls of the box. These were miter cuts, rabbets, and dado slots. Miter cuts are angled cuts made on either the table saw with the blade at 45 degrees or on the specialized miter saw. Rabbets are grooves on the edges of a piece of wood and can be used to connect to other pieces. Dados are small notches in the middle pieces that can fit sliding objects like a box lid. After lunch, we practiced Miter cuts for what felt like forever. It took me a while to get them right, but eventually I got it down. The rest of the day was spent working on a cut list, which shows the plank of wood used for a project and how much of it will be used and for what. I am looking forward to visiting the lumber yard again tomorrow to buy S4S (Surfaced on 4 Sides) wood for the final project. Today was interesting but uneventful.
