Today, we started the morning by cutting rabbets, dados, and finishing miter cuts for the box walls. I had a later start than others because I had to run my wall pieces through the planer, as they were not uniform in thickness. After that minor setback, it was time to finish miter cuts on the table saw, which was still set to the proper blade angle for my purposes. After some confusion about measurements, I cut all four of my walls to the proper sizes and trimmed a few edges. After this, I used the router table to cut rabbets into the bottom of all four box walls. This was the highlight of my day; I was not talented with the router during my time in Design Tech and could barely get a straight cut, so to see myself get a straight groove on the first pass was a great feeling. After the rabbets were complete, I used the 90-degree angle table saw in the lowered position to cut dados into the walls for the sliding lid. By this point, my walls were complete, or so I thought, as Mr. Grisbee pointed out that the walls would not fit into the base I had previously cut out. After trimming the walls and cutting a new base, I turned my attention to the lid. I cut a small section from a board of thin Mahogany to match the rest of the box. After trimming it to make sure it fit, Mr. Grisbee gave me instructions on how to use a drill press to get a finger notch in the lid for easy access. Around this time, the class broke for lunch, which was shortened due to the afternoon field trip to Clark's Lumber to get wood for the final project. Having been there before, we quickly located the wood for each of our projects. Mine was Maple, and as I was using the same type of wood as Kamilla, we chose to split a nine-foot board. After getting all of the wood into the bus, we headed back to school. Once we returned, Mr. Grisbee explained how to glue the boxes and tighten the edges using tape. After gluing the angled miter cuts, I glued the base into the rabbet groove on the bottom and clamped it down. Overall, today was very interesting, and I enjoyed the trip to the lumber yard. I am very excited to finish my box tomorrow.
