During the first day of our M-Term we continued on the brainstorming that we had started earlier this year. During this term we plan to each construct some sort of box and then we will each have the opportunity to make a project of our own. I plan to make a box to hold 1-2 books for travel purposes and my large project will be a bookshelf.
Today we also had our first lesson about woodworking, we learned about milling and resawing, processes that will be helpful as we can cut down on costs by doing them ourselves rather than paying extra at the lumberyard.
Milling lumber consists of flattening one face with a jointer, squaring an edge with the jointer, planing the second face with the planer and then squaring the second edge with the table saw.
Resawing consists of making a thick board thinner by cutting it into two (or more) equal length but thinner pieces.
I am annoyed at the blueprinting stage of my projects as I find it hard to visualize what I want/need to draw so that I can properly measure. I hope that by the end of this term my ability for visualization will have improved.
I chose to build a bookshelf for my large project as I have no more space on my other five bookshelves and there are 30 odd books currently on my floor. I hope that by making a bookshelf myself I will feel proud oh my books and read them even more than I already do. It will also help in decluttering my room.
I chose a box to transport books as my box project as most of the damage that my books sustain happens during transport, and this will allow me to not have them damaged as often!
I am hopeful that this term will allow me to advance my woodworking skills!
